The Apple Duo Dock docking connector is a proprietary 152-pin interface (JAE part number JX20-152BA-D1LTH) used on the Duo Dock and Duo Dock II docking stations introduced in the early 1990s alongside the PowerBook Duo series. The connector mounts directly to the Duo Dock main logic board and mates with a matching receptacle on the PowerBook Duo rear panel, giving the dock direct access to the CPU’s 32-bit address bus, 32-bit data bus, and control signals — effectively presenting the dock’s NuBus expansion slot, full-size ADB ports, SCSI, video, and audio circuitry as an extension of the Duo itself. Power flows bidirectionally: the Duo Dock supplies regulated and raw voltages to the Duo, whilst the dock draws CPU bus signals directly from the portable. The connector also carries modem DAA (Data Access Arrangement) lines, sound channels, and several proprietary control signals that manage sleep, bus arbitration, and expansion-device detection.

Notes

  • Active-low signals are indicated by a leading slash (e.g. /AS, /HALT).
  • The connector is Apple-proprietary and is not based on any external IEEE or ANSI standard. The JAE part number for the dock-side plug is JX20-152BA-D1LTH; the mating receptacle on the PowerBook Duo rear panel is a corresponding JAE part.
  • Several pin numbers are absent from the table (e.g. pins 5, 6, 8, 16–18, 55, 60, 64, 71, 82, 85, 136, 149, 150); these positions are either reserved, unused, or mechanically keyed on the physical connector.
  • The /PLUG IN signal (pin 3) is pulled to ground by the expansion device to signal its presence to the Duo; /SLOT IN (pin 114) performs an equivalent function for a secondary expansion card.
  • The Duo Dock presents its internal NuBus slot to the PowerBook Duo via the CPU bus signals carried on this connector; from the Duo’s perspective the dock appears as a NuBus peripheral.
  • The DAA GND pins (75, 76, 151, 152) provide an isolated ground reference for the modem DAA circuitry, separate from the logic ground to reduce noise on the analogue telephone-line interface.

Signals

  • PR +24V EXT — Raw, unregulated +24 V supplied from the AC power adapter; multiple pins carry this rail to handle current capacity.
  • /PLUG IN — Power-surge control line; grounded by the expansion device to indicate it is physically connected.
  • GND — Logic ground reference.
  • /ON/OFF OUT — Signal from the on/off button, used to initiate power transitions.
  • /STERM — Synchronous termination; asserted to terminate a synchronous bus cycle.
  • /DS — Data strobe; indicates valid data on the data bus during a bus cycle.
  • /AS — Address strobe; indicates valid address on the address bus.
  • +5V MAIN OUT — Regulated +5 V power supplied from the dock to the Duo; distributed across multiple pins.
  • /HALT — CPU halt signal; when asserted the processor suspends execution.
  • /BERR — Bus error; signals an error condition on the CPU bus.
  • /BGACK — Bus grant acknowledge; asserted by a bus master to confirm it has assumed control of the bus.
  • ADDR[0]–ADDR[31] — 32-bit CPU address bus lines, split across both sides of the connector.
  • IOCLK — 15.6672 MHz I/O clock signal used for peripheral timing.
  • SIZ[0]–SIZ[1] — Transfer size bits; together they encode whether the current bus transfer is 8, 16, or 32 bits wide.
  • DATA[0]–DATA[31] — 32-bit CPU data bus lines.
  • /SCC IRQ — Interrupt request from the SCC (Serial Communications Controller) to the CPU.
  • SERVEE — Supplies −5 V to the SCC line-driver transceivers for RS-422 signalling.
  • +8V SOUND — Dedicated “clean” +8 V rail for the audio output circuitry, isolated to reduce interference.

  • DAA CNTLF — Control signal for the modem DAA circuit.
  • DAA ID IN — Identity input from the 152-pin connector to the modem card, used to identify the modem type.
  • /RING DET — Ring detect; asserted by the modem DAA when an incoming telephone ring is detected.
  • /RB DVR — Modem relay B driver; controls the B relay in the DAA telephone-line switching circuit.
  • /RA DVR — Modem relay A driver; controls the A relay in the DAA telephone-line switching circuit.
  • EXT MIC SEL — Indicates that an external microphone has been plugged in, switching the input source.
