The Metricom Ricochet Phase I was an early wireless packet modem operating in the 902–928 MHz licence-free Part 15 ISM band at a 100 kbit/s RF data rate. It is AT-compatible, using the Hayes command set, so a host treats it like an ordinary wired modem. The Ricochet modem has a single serial connector for the computer; the cable that links it to the host differs between PC and Macintosh, with the PC cable terminating in a DB-9 at the computer end and an 8P8C (RJ-45) plug at the modem end, carrying standard RS-232 signals.
Notes
The DB-9 connector is a male D-sub (DE-9) that plugs into the PC serial port (DTE); the RJ-45 connector is an 8P8C plug that mates with the Ricochet modem (DCE).
