Baytech RPC-3 to DB9 serial port adapter

Wiring for the BayTech RPC-3 EIA-232 RJ-45 control port to DE-9 PC serial port adapter (part no. 9FRJ45PC-1).

The BayTech RPC-3 (and RPC-3A) Remote Power Control unit exposes its management port as an 8-pin RJ-45 socket using the EIA-232 (TIA/EIA-232-F) serial interface standard. To connect a PC, Bay Technical Associates supplied a passive adapter — part number 9FRJ45PC-1 — that converts the modular RJ-45 plug to a DE-9 female connector compatible with a standard PC COM port. A separate crossed RJ-45 cable (model RJ08X007) is required between the RPC-3 device and the adapter. The adapter carries all eight EIA-232 signals: TxD, RxD, RTS, CTS, DTR, DSR, DCD, and GND.

Notes

The RPC-3 control port is an 8-pin modular (RJ-45) socket; the DE-9 adapter (9FRJ45PC-1) is passive and terminates with a female DE-9 connector for the PC DTE side. A crossed RJ-45 patch cable (part no. RJ08X007) must be used between the RPC-3 port and the adapter — a straight-through patch cord will not work. A separate DB-25 adapter (part no. 25FRJ45PC-1) is also available for older PC serial ports. EIA-232 signal levels are ±3–15 V; maximum recommended cable run is approximately 15 m (50 ft) at standard baud rates up to 20 kbps.

Signals

  • rpc-3 TX — transmit data from the RPC-3 to the terminal
  • rpc-3 RX — receive data from the terminal to the RPC-3
  • rpc-3 RTS — Request To Send from the RPC-3
  • rpc-3 DTR — Data Terminal Ready from the RPC-3
  • GND — signal ground
  • rpc-3 CD — Carrier Detect (DCD) input to the RPC-3
