PS/2 Y Mouse and Keyboard adapter

IBM introduced the PS/2 interface with the Personal System/2 line in 1987, replacing the 5-pin DIN AT keyboard connector with a 6-pin mini-DIN. The standard connector carries Data on pin 1, Clock on pin 5, Ground on pin 3, and +5 Vdc on pin 4, with pins 2 and 6 normally reserved. Many late-1990s and early-2000s laptops — including Toshiba Satellite and HP OmniBook/Pavilion models — exposed a single combo PS/2 port that multiplexed both keyboard and mouse channels by using those reserved pins; this Y-adapter separates them into two standard female connectors. Mouse signals are routed straight-through on pins 1 and 5, while keyboard signals are carried on pins 2 and 6 of the computer connector, emerging on pins 1 and 5 of the keyboard female.

This adapter is tested with Toshiba Satellite 2100 CDS, 405CS notebooks. Notes

The 6-pin mini-DIN (PS/2) connector uses open-collector Data and Clock lines pulled to +5 Vdc; supply voltage is +4.5 V to +5.5 V with a maximum device current of 275 mA. The combo port on affected laptops must have hardware support for the dual-channel mode — a standard single-function PS/2 port will not work with this adapter. The host port assigns the keyboard channel to IRQ 1 (via the i8042 controller) and the auxiliary/mouse channel to IRQ 12. Keyboard and mouse 6-pin mini-DIN connectors are physically and electrically identical; only the port they are plugged into determines their function.

Signals

  • Data (pin 1 of mouse female / pin 2 of computer male → pin 1 of keyboard female) — bidirectional open-collector serial data; idle high; driven low-level to max 0.5 Vdc; high-level minimum 2.0 Vdc
  • Ground (pin 3) — common ground, connected through to both female connectors
  • +5 Vdc (pin 4) — supply voltage +4.5 V to +5.5 V; maximum 275 mA; connected through to both female connectors
  • Clock (pin 5 of mouse female / pin 6 of computer male → pin 5 of keyboard female) — open-collector clock; 10–16.7 kHz; idle high; driven by device or host to synchronise data transfer
