Power Macintosh 7200, 7500, 8500, 9500

The DAV (Digital Audio Video) connector is a 60-pin internal flat-ribbon connector fitted to the AV card of Power Macintosh AV models — including the 7200, 7500, 8500, and 9500 — introduced by Apple in 1995. It exposes the AV card’s 4:2:2 unscaled YUV video input data bus and its associated control signals, enabling a PCI expansion card to access real-time digital video data via a 7-inch 60-conductor flat-ribbon cable. The DAV connector is a functional superset of the earlier 34-pin DVA (Digital Video Application) connector used on the Quadra 630 and Power Macintosh 5200/6200 series; the 7196 DESC IC on the AV card handles video input data from the bus. A PCI card connected via DAV can incorporate a hardware video compressor or other video processor, and may also supply or receive analogue audio through the connector.

Notes

The 60-pin DAV connector is located at the top edge of the AV card and connects via a 7-inch 60-conductor flat-ribbon cable to a PCI expansion card. The DAV is a superset of the earlier 34-pin DVA connector; an adapter cable allows DVA-compatible cards to interface with the 60-pin DAV. On the Power Macintosh 8500, composite and S-Video signals are available on both input and output via the AV card; the 7500 provides input capability only. The video data bus carries 4:2:2 YUV data unscaled; the Y (luma) bus occupies pins 19–26 and the UV (chroma) bus occupies pins 11–18. Analogue audio is routed on pins 42–44 (left, common, right); digital audio occupies pins 46–52. The IIC (I²C) control bus (pins 39–40) and direction control (pin 38) manage communication with the video digitiser IC. Reserved pins should be left unconnected.

  • Ground — common signal and power return; distributed across many odd-numbered pins
  • UV bit 7–0 (pins 11–18) — 8-bit chrominance (U/V) data bus from the 4:2:2 YUV video input stream
  • Y bit 7–0 (pins 19–26) — 8-bit luminance data bus from the 4:2:2 YUV video input stream
  • Line-locked clock (pin 28) — pixel clock locked to the incoming video line rate
  • Clock reference qualifier (pin 30) — qualifies the validity of the line-locked clock signal
  • Vertical sync (pin 32) — vertical synchronisation signal from the video input
  • HRef (pin 36) — horizontal reference (active-video) gate signal indicating valid pixel data
  • DIR* (pin 38) — direction control for the data bus; active-low
  • IIC Data* (pin 39) — I²C serial data line for control of the video digitiser IC
  • IIC Clock (pin 40) — I²C serial clock line
  • Analog audio input left (pin 42) — left-channel analogue audio input
  • Analog audio input common (pin 43) — common/ground reference for analogue audio inputs
  • Analog audio input right (pin 44) — right-channel analogue audio input
  • Digital audio input (pin 46) — serial digital audio data input
  • Digital audio output (pin 48) — serial digital audio data output
  • Digital audio clock (pin 50) — bit clock for the serial digital audio interface
  • Digital audio sync (pin 52) — word/frame sync for the serial digital audio interface
  • S video input C component (pin 54) — chrominance (C) component of the S-Video input signal
  • Video input ground (pins 55, 57) — dedicated ground reference for video input signals
  • S video input Y component (pin 56) — luminance (Y) component of the S-Video input signal
  • Reserved — reserved pins (2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 34, 58, 59, 60) must be left unconnected
