The XPSi (Serial Interface module) is a serial control card for the Avocent/Cybex XP4000 and XP4040 analogue KVM chassis; the Black Box KV1609C is the rebranded equivalent for the ServSwitch Multi EXP chassis. Each card provides four RJ45 8P8C ports, numbered 1 to 4 from top to bottom, which connect to target equipment via straight-through Cat5 UTP cable. RS-232 signals are carried at the RJ45 port and converted to DB9 or DB25 using adapter modules (Cybex SAD series); the interface operates at 9600 baud with hardware flow control or at 115200 baud with in-band flow control.

Notes

  • The RJ45 ports use straight-through Cat5 UTP wiring (pin 1 to pin 1, pin 8 to pin 8); crossover cables are not required.
  • Cybex SAD-series adapters (SAD-5 through SAD-12) convert the RJ45 port to DB9 or DB25 (male or female); SAD-6 provides a 6-pin mini-DIN for HP 9000 targets.
  • Port addressing follows the scheme chassis_number + slot_letter + port_number (e.g. 15D2); up to eight sessions may be open simultaneously via the Alt-O command.
  • Signals are RS-232 level; the card does not operate as RS-485 or any other differential standard.

Signals

  • DTR — Data Terminal Ready; asserted by the card (DTE) to signal readiness to the remote device.
  • RTS — Request to Send; asserted by the card to initiate hardware flow control.
  • GND — Signal ground reference (pins 3 and 6).
  • TXD — Transmitted Data; serial data output from the card to the target.
  • RXD — Received Data; serial data input to the card from the target.
  • CTS — Clear to Send; asserted by the remote device to grant the card permission to transmit.
  • DSR — Data Set Ready; asserted by the remote device to indicate readiness.
